OFW Home Building — Remote Window Selection Guide

Window and glass selection guide for OFW families building homes remotely in the Philippines. How to specify, verify, and manage your window project from abroad.

OFW Home Building — Remote Window Selection Guide

Building a home in the Philippines while working abroad is one of the most challenging projects an OFW family undertakes. Windows are a significant investment — typically ₱80,000 to ₱300,000 for a complete house — and getting the specification wrong means expensive replacement within a few years. This guide helps you specify, verify, and manage your window project from overseas.

The Five Decisions You Need to Make

DecisionWhat to SpecifyImpact
Window typeSliding, casement, or awning per roomVentilation and rain protection
Aluminum seriesSeries 798 minimum (not 38)Structural strength and lifespan
Glass typeTempered 6mm minimumSafety and durability
Frame finishPowder coat or anodizedCorrosion resistance and appearance
Hardware gradeBranded rollers and locksDaily operation and security

Common Mistakes OFW Families Make

Accepting "standard" specifications — when a contractor says "standard aluminum windows," they typically mean the cheapest available — Series 38 with 0.8mm gauge aluminum and 5mm regular glass. This specification fails within 3 to 5 years in Philippine weather. Always specify the aluminum series, gauge thickness, and glass type in writing.
Not visiting during window installation — if possible, schedule a home visit during the window installation phase — or assign a trusted family member to be present. Once the frames are installed and plastered around, replacing them is expensive and disruptive.
Paying in full upfront — standard payment terms should be: 50% deposit on order confirmation, 40% upon delivery of materials to site, 10% upon completion and hose test. Never pay 100% before installation.
No written quotation — insist on an itemized quotation listing every component: aluminum series and gauge, glass type and thickness, hardware brand and model, number of mosquito screens, sealant specification, and warranty terms.

How to Verify Quality Remotely

Request photos at each stage — material delivery (showing aluminum profile labels), frame fabrication, frame installation before plastering, completed installation.
Ask for the aluminum profile stamp — reputable aluminum suppliers stamp the series number and gauge on the extrusion. Ask your installer to photograph this stamp on the actual profiles being used.
Tempered glass verification — every tempered glass panel has a permanent etched stamp in one corner. Ask for a close-up photo of this stamp.
Hose test video — after installation, request a video of the hose test — water sprayed at the window exterior while checking for leaks from inside. This is the definitive quality verification for weather sealing.
